Nice thoughts. I would add that the goal should be to promote not the pastor, but Jesus as the one who is ultimately strong, trustworthy, and compassionate.


No question about it. Our lives and if we have the responsibility, our preaching, must be about revealing Jesus.

One thing to note is that it's not only about being trustworthy, being strong, and caring about the people... but it's about communicating those things to them through words and actions. I think it is quite possible to be all of those things... but if the voters (or parishioners, who vote by their attendance) don't actually trust a leader, feel cared for, and experience that strength... then the fact that those characteristics exist will not be enough to keep them around.
