I have several updates to my earlier post on the dechurching of Chicago.
- First, I've discovered 2 more churches that were converted to other uses in the nearby area of the our Lincoln Park and Lakeview locations--that brings the new total to 11.
- Second, I've clarified info/addresses on a few of the churches listed in the previous post.
- Third, I've discovered a helpful resource the Landmark Preservation Council of Illinois which has chronicled the conversions of some of the more historic church buildings.
Here are the edited addresses of the churches I mentioned that are within blocks of each other on Barry:
- 1019 W. Barry
- 3101 N. Seminary Avenue
- 3055 N. Clifton
And the additions to the list (#10 and #11) are:
- 555 W. Belden Ave.
- 1719 N. Orleans St.
I've had a similar experience having pastored in Toronto Canada. The building where my congregation was [west side of Toronto] has been converted into a 24 unit high income family dwellings. The lowest unit starts at $399,000 for a small one bedroom up to 1.5 million for the 3 bedroom unit in the bell tower. I couldn't afford to live in the very building I pastored.
