Here is an email I received on 2.18.08 from Pastor Edward Simiyu...
Kevin,
Thanks brother for your prayers and thoughts. The tension has cooled and all attention is now on the Koffi Annan talks. We are praying that a political settlement is reached otherwise there may be very little hope for Kenya. It seems like the daggers are waiting for the final word on the mediation. I have been unable to go out of Nairobi since the last Caravan of Hope trip. I was to go to pokot this week but moved the trip to next week. All my contacts there are intemittently on phone due to cut off from the rest of Kenya after the chaos. I have been assured though by the Chief government administrator of the area is safe and that I should visit to continue with our work there. Their concern is that they dont want arms to filter through from the region to the rest of the country as that would make the conflict unmanageable.
I shall therefore be in pokot on 26th Feb till 28th. I shall carry more foodstuff for the displaced camping in Nakuru and Eldoret once again as misery continues to bite. No resettlement will happen and the people will stay in the camps till annan concludes the mediation. No one also wants to rebuild in Kibera though we want to spearhead some reconstruction this Saturday through our on going peace "talks" at the KTDP. We want to make everyone know that our lives are not in the hands of politicians but in God and that they shouldnt cause us to turn against each other.
Good news... The caravan of hope has now been embraced and taken over by the churches in Nairobi. I am told that there is even a website for it! This was after we can back and shared the experience with the churches. It is now on radios and tv here. I am glad that City Harvest spearheaded this and thank you for coming behind it.
Could you do a little email that I could read to the warriors next week (translated of course!) I am sure they would be glad to hear that you have send a word directly to them assuring them of your prayers and urging them to keep the peace? It would be great if you could scan and send on your church letterhead.
I have been irregular on emails. We are now paying the price for the crisis as prices for everything have gone up. It is a big strain and should be a lesson to us that we are the ones to suffer if we resort to chaos.
Blessings
Edward
